August brought notable shifts in the crypto market, with altcoins leading strong gains, Ethereum breaking a record last seen in 2021, and Bitcoin pulling back after reaching a new high.

 

Gainers: Altcoins in the spotlight

Several altcoins posted standout results in August. Mantle (MNT) climbed +67.2%, while Chainlink (LINK) gained +43.7% and POL (formerly MATIC) rose +42.2%. Arbitrum (ARB) also advanced +31.0%, with Pump.fun (PUMP) adding +26.1%.


These gains were supported by renewed demand for infrastructure tokens and broader optimism in the market.

Ethereum hits a new peak

Ethereum (ETH) set a new all-time high on August 24, reaching $4,945.60, its strongest level since November 2021. The rally was fueled by rising institutional activity and confidence in Ethereum’s role as the leading smart contract platform.

Bitcoin after the peak

Bitcoin reached $124,128 on August 14 before retreating to around $108k by month-end. The decline reflected profit-taking after the sharp rally, with trading activity showing the market adjusting to the new levels.

BlackRock’s $10 billion iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) has surged nearly 1,400% since its inception, driven by strong long-term inflows in tech and semiconductor stocks. 


Here are the latest top 10 holdings of IGM and their weights in the fund:


1. Apple (AAPL): 9.34%

2. Nvidia (NVDA): 8.82%

3. Broadcom (AVGO): 8.38%

4. Microsoft (MSFT): 8.13%

5. Micron Technology (MU): 4.98%

6. Meta Platforms (META): 4.76%

7. Alphabet Class A (GOOGL): 4.19%

The iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF seeks to track the S&P North American Expanded Technology Sector Index, an index composed of U.S. and Canadian techology and select communication services companies. 


The fund offers a way to invest in North American hardware, software, and interactive media industries. 


IGM currently holds 295 stocks, with its top 10 positions accounting for 58.25% of the fund’s total assets. The ETF manages nearly $10 billion in net assets.


The ETF uses a modified market-cap weighting scheme. Market leaders naturally grow to dominate larger portions of the ETF over time. 


The top holdings (Apple, Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta, Alphabet) have delivered compound annual growth rates (CAGR) well above the broader S&P 500.
